How we will address the challenges and create value for the industry?

As a self-regulatory organization, FairP2P offers the esports and video gaming P2P skill-wagering sector an opportunity to establish a level playing field for players, attract and sustain players in greater numbers, and provide a self-regulatory and governance platform that will unify industry practices and codes of conduct.

P2P Wagering Value Capture / Monetization
Wagering on P2P skill-based gameplay is a growing segment in esports that presents a noteworthy opportunity for value creation. Despite the unsophisticated matchmaking algorithms used by most unsanctioned P2P wagering platforms, players are willing to wager against each other on games. We see massive untapped potential for game publishers to participate in this process and capture the merited value in this sector.

The Chess Conundrum
A phenomenon occurring on P2P wagering platforms where more skilled and experienced players drive away the less experienced players by dominating the playing field. As a result, the competitive platform experiences high turnover and attrition rates among the inexperienced and casual players due to many factors including the lack of fair and transparent matchmaking. This significantly diminishes the platform’s growth potential and hampers its ability to scale and run profitable operations.

Growing Pains

Despite the unsophisticated matchmaking algorithms used by most unsanctioned P2P wagering platforms, players are eager to engage in monetized competitions against each other. Monetized P2P skill-based gameplay is growing. We see immense untapped potential for game publishers to ethically participate in this process.

The Chess Conundrum

The ability of experienced players to dominate a game platform drives away less experienced players. This leads to high turnover and attrition rates for inexperienced and casual players. Gameplay environments that discourage amateur players diminish the platform’s growth potential and hamper its ability to scale operations.

Limited Player Verification

Currently the competitive P2P gaming industry lacks clear and uniform standards for player verification. While official tournaments, broadcasted events and other public events identify and match players in advance, P2P gameplay platforms do not. In the P2P environment players do not know with certainty whom they are playing against and whether or not their opponent is a significantly more skilled player. This may not matter in casual games played for fun, but when money is involved, fair matchmaking makes all the difference.

Skill vs Chance

Today, there is a lack of transparency as well as a recognized process that certifies a game as skill-based. Skill-based games eliminate the uncertainty that comes with the element of chance. Skill-based games with fair match-making process present a level playing field and offer an equal chance for all participants to win. The presence of chance in a game creates uncertainty and poses a greater risk to players and the industry as a whole.

Unverifiable Matchmaking
Today the competitive video gaming industry lacks clear and uniformly accepted standards for player verification. During official tournaments, broadcasted events and other public events the players are known and matched in advance, which eliminates the need for on-the-spot authentication; however, during private matches, the players do not know with certainty whom they are playing against and whether or not their opponent is a significantly more skilled player. While this may not matter when playing for fun, it certainly doe matters when players are wagering against each other.

Skill vs Chance
Games deemed as skill-based games eliminate the uncertainty that comes with the element of chance; therefore, such games present a level playing field and offer an equal chance for all participants to win. Today, however, there is a lack of game-mechanics transparency or a recognized verification process that would certify a game as being purely skill-based. This uncertainty presents a greater risk to players and the industry as a whole.

P2P Wagering Value Capture / Monetization
P2P skill-wagering on video games is a growing segment in the competitive gaming sector (esports) that presents a noteworthy opportunity for value generation and capture. Currently, all of the financial value is captured by 3 rd party unsanctioned P2P wagering platforms that provide matchmaking and escrow services for players. Despite using unsophisticated matchmaking algorithms, players are willing to wager against each other on games that are played on the publishers’ game servers. There is a massive untapped potential for game publishers to participate in the value distribution in this sector.
